Structural Behaviour of Concrete Energy Piles in Thermal Loadings

چکیده
The thermo-mechanical behaviour of concrete energy pile foundations with different single and double U-tube shapes incorporated was analysed using the Comsol Multi-physics package. For the analysis, a 3D numerical model in real scale of the concrete pile and surrounding soil was simulated regarding actual operation of ground heat exchangers (GHE) and the surrounding ambient temperature. Based on initial ground temperature profile measured in situ, tube inlet temperature was considered to range from 6C to 0C (during the contraction process) over a 30-day period. Extra thermal stresses and deformations were calculated during the simulations and differences arising from the use of two different systems (single-tube and double-tube) were analysed. The results revealed no significant difference for extra thermal stresses at the centre of the pile in either system. However, displacements over the pile length were found to be up to 1.5-fold higher in the double-tube system than the singletube system. Thermo-mechanical behaviour of energy piles
Energy piles are an effective and economic means of using geothermal energy resources for heating and cooling buildings, contributing to legislative requirements for renewable energy in new construction. While such piles have been used for around 25 years with no apparent detrimental effect, there is limited understanding of their thermo-mechanical behaviour. This paper synthesises the results ...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of GFRP bars contribution on performance of concrete structural elements
In this study, twenty glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforced concrete specimens were modelled using finite element method to predict the effect of GFRP compressive bars on the flexural strength and ductility of GFRP reinforced concrete beams. Also, the contribution of GFRP longitudinal rebars to the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete columns is determined. The concrete elas...
متن کاملAssessing the Applicability of Thermal Response Testing to Energy Piles
Deep foundations are increasingly being used, not just to carry structural loads, but also to act as heat exchangers as part of a ground source heat pump system. Such foundations, often called energy piles, have the potential to make significant contributions towards meeting the heating and cooling demands of buildings, thus reducing the overall energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions d...
متن کاملG-Functions for Multiple Interacting Pile Heat Exchangers
Pile heat exchangers – where heat transfer pipes are cast into the building piled foundations – offer an opportunity to use ground energy systems without the additional construction costs related to the provision of special purpose heat exchangers. However, analysis methods for pile heat exchangers are still under development. In particular there is an absence of available methods and guidance ...
متن کاملA New Generation of Composite Piles: Behaviour, Design Considerations and Field Applications
Piles used in bridges, structures and marine environments are typically produced using concrete, steel, and timber. High repair and replacement costs of these piles have led North American highway agencies and port authorities to investigate the feasibility of using durable materials such as fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in pile applications. This paper presents a new generation of composite ...
